Ilove taking photos and am constantly whipping out my phone to take a quick snap.This month I have done what I've been promising myself I'll do for ages, I'veadded a new member to the family.

Baileyis a real life proper camera, by far the best camera I've owned and together wehave plans. I've been desperate to explore photography more, to take the timeto really enjoy and capture the simple and beautiful things around me. WithGeorge growing up so fast having a "proper" camera is a must for me.I don't want to miss a thing, not one expression, not one outing.

2012has been a year of firsts for me already and I have much planned but aboveeverything 2012 is the year of my putting myself first for a change. I'mdetermined to enjoy a hobby that I know I will get a lot out of.

Spanish Stray Dogs - and Precious Parcels

What's it all about?
Spanish Stray Dogs is a non-profit organisation formed by Amee Townsend and although they are not a registered charity nor an official registered organisation, they are simply a group of people working together to help abandoned animals and to promote animal welfare.

"Although it was once upon a time just me SSD are now a very happy international team of like-minded humans who just love dogs. And we just try our hardest to help where help is needed whether its helping the dogs that are waiting in the Spanish killing stations or helping to free beagles that are locked in laboratories. Helping dogs is what we live for".

Their Main Aims:

To re-home abandoned cats and dogs from Los Barrios animal shelter, Spain. (Currently they have 120 dogs that have been abandoned)
To assist with fund-raising to keep the shelter in the hands of the voluntary sector.
To assist in the day to day running of the shelter.
To promote good animal welfare.
To promote the importance of neutering and spraying pets

How they achieve this:

By publicising abandoned dogs on social media
Working closely with their partnered organisations by publicising dogs by all means possible overseas and locally.
By running media and Facebook campaigns to raise funds
Recruiting volunteers
Funding & purchasing items required for the shelter.
Escorting dogs to/from vets, airports, other shelters, foster homes.
By negotiating special rates with local vets regarding neutering.
Giving advice to potential owners or existing owners regarding pet welfare.
Carrying out home checks on potential adopters and foster parents.

They also help with the Beagle Freedom Project and so far this year, they helped to send 40 Beagles to Los Angeles: See more here

Why we're supporting them
I saw a friend's link on Facebook that caught my eye, I saw some dogs that captured my heart and now I cannot turn my back on them. Yes!... they're miles away, believe me I wish they were closer but they're not. A poor homeless dog in Spain is no less important than a poor homeless dog in the UK to me. If a local charity had caught my eye first then I'd probably be helping them instead, but they didn't. So now I am doing everything I can to help these amazing volunteers and more importantly, the dogs. All these abandoned pups want is someone to love them and look after them just like your own pets do.
Without the volunteers that care for them every single day and the kind people who donate food, money, medicines and blankets and the people who organise their campaigns, these little chaps would never have the chance to wag their tails! So that's why we're supporting Spanish Stray Dogs.

Our trip to the shelter
Now, I'm not one to do something half-heartedly and I think it's only right that I meet some of the wonderful volunteers who are doing an amazing job looking after and trying to rehome these dogs. Not to mention how much I want to meet the dogs and give every single one a great big cuddle.
So the flights are booked! Myself and my very good friend and colleague Sarah are leaving on Friday 27th January to go and help for a couple of days.

What a start to the new year!

It was only 18 days ago that corks were popping, indiscreet kisses were being shared (not by me!) and New Year resolutions were being made. 2012 is here and what a cracking start!

I don't make resolutions as such (I read "Don't eat chocolate" as "Go on, stuff yourself with Galaxy!", but have hit the new year running regardless.

So far Precious Parcels have had two very successful flash sales on the Facebook page (make sure you are following so you don't miss out on future events!) with the proceeds (a whopping £170 already!) having been sent to The Spanish Stray Dogs. A huge thank you to everyone who took part and have already donated. The work the Centre does relies on the kindness of others with their donations and you lot have been hugely generous! You'll hear a lot more about this shortly as it is the charity that Precious Parcels has adopted as it is something close to my heart.
I have my flight to Gibraltar booked and in just 10 days I'll be visiting the shelter myself to meet some of the amazing volunteers and beautiful dogs and to find out more about the rehoming process in the hope that 2012 will see more of the dogs being rehomed in the UK.
Secret talks between myself and the design pad have been going on, watch out for a variety of new products in 2012.
We've had a really busy January already (what happened to the usual January slump after the manic Christmas season?). This month has been brilliant with many new and returning customers ordering.
There is a sale on this week for the Red and Green baking sets, usually £7.95 they are selling at £5.95 for this week only.
Oh, and we featured in Gurgle magazine!!

I think I can safely say that so far 2012 has been a cracker and here at PP there is a lot more in the pipeline for the coming months.

I always have my phone with me which means I can catch those quick moments and spectacular views that I'd miss otherwise whilst unpacking and sorting out my "proper" camera. I am so grateful that on the day this was taken that modern phones now have such great camera functions!

The title of this photo sums up my attitude in 2012 perfectly... The Sky's the Limit!

The Precious Parcel's Guide to Decorating a Child's Room

When they are very little the kids don't care what their bedroom looks like, but we do! Decorating the nursery is an important task while waiting for the new arrival. Hours are spent poring over catalogues and trawling the internet for ideas, it's a rite of passage, it's fun and quite often, we change the whole colour scheme again in six months!

Our ideas about what is practical and what looks best in a nursery very quickly change when our children develop their own personalities and their own likes and dislikes. To save you time, money and effort we've come up with this short guide to decorating a child's bedroom.

1. Go neutral! You don't have to have pink, blue, green or yellow walls. Go for something along the lines of a soft cream or magnolia. Fresh, warm and a blank canvas for you to decorate and change as time goes on.

2. Choose good quality paint. By good quality paint we mean paint that can be wiped down. Trust us, there is only so many ways you can arrange the furniture to hide sticky hand prints or artistic scribbles.

3. Personalise the room. Peppa Pig, Thomas, fairies and cars come and go as your child grows. George has had so many favourites that getting fed up chopping and changing everything we decorated his room in the best style... George Style!
Large wooden letters, like these pictured, across the wall spell out the owner of the beautifully arranged (toy strewn mess) we like to refer to as George's room.

Beautiful handpainted letters with matching gingham ribbon and polka dots if requested. Letters measure approx 20cm high. Available in most colours, 6 letters £24.95.

4. Get black out blinds. You don't have to spend a fortune having permanent blinds put up if you don't want them but can find some fantastic temporary ones with the power of Google. This helps if your house is near a road and has headlights beaming in, for daytime naps, bright early mornings and long summer nights. Blinds or sanity savers, call them what you like but they are a must!

Keep it simple, keep it clean and have fun choosing a practical, safe and fun bedroom which is as individual as your little people are!

The Gallery - The Kitchen

I haven't taken part in The Gallery for a while but when I saw this week's prompt was "The Kitchen", well how could I not??

The first thing I saw when I visited this house was the kitchen. Instantly I fell in love! I knew this was where I wanted George to have his meals prepared, where I wanted to pour my Baileys and where I wanted to put my Chinese takeaway onto plate(s)!

Granted this isn't the best of photos but you get the gist. My friend Nicki loves this kitchen too. On her last visit she kept looking in the cupboard under the stove in the middle of the kitchen, trying to work out how the gas hob worked when it wasn't connected to the wall (yes really - sorry Nicki lol!).

They say that the kitchen is the hub of your home, and in our house it most certainly is! I love it!

PS: My kitchen always looks this tidy. I have not run around like a mad woman cleaning it up so that I could take this picture... honest!

No I'm not joking and please stop throwing things! I was as surprised as you were when someone posted a link to the Xmas Clock on the Precious Parcels Facebook page.
The worst thing about this clock is that you can't pause it, no, Christmas is coming and fast!

Thankfully the majority of the general public don't wait until Christmas Eve (like me!) and then run around like a headless chicken trying to find that perfect gift. As usual we have already had plenty of Christmas orders for items across our range, and now from our extended Xmas section too.

What is lovely this year is to have seen an increase in the amount of bespoke orders, people emailing and asking for something slightly new, different wording or colours. Happy Belated Birthday... To US!

This weekend marked our third birthday. Three years! In some ways it seems to have been just yesterday when PP was born and in other ways, we can't remember life without it. Over the past few years there are been many new products, we have opened up to offer items for wholesale and best of all have been able to welcome new and "old" customers back time and time again.

PreciousParcels wouldn't be what she is if it wasn't for the support of you lovely lot. Those who regularly visit the Facebook page, who say hi and share the love on Twitter, and all of you that read this blog... thank you!

We also love the fact that some of you have taken the extra time to revisit the site and leave feedback in our guestbook. I wish we could publish all the emails and Facebook comments we get because each one means such a lot.

I love it when George creates something (clearly he is going to be a renowned world-class artist). He paints, crayons and draws... a lot. Nursery are great and send his brilliant pieces of art home for me to admire.

This is why I ended up with a cupboard full of drawings. A big cupboard. A while back I decided I needed a better system. This is where the Masterpiece Plaque comes in!

Now I display one at a time (rather than 30,000) and when that one comes down I decide whether it is one of the 5-6 a month I save or whether it is to be recycled. It's a good system, tidier and George loves seeing his work up for everyone to see.

The blue plaque has a working peg, paint splash details and is finished with brown twine and blue gingham ribbon. It's a definite space saver for our house and a lovely feature.
This plaque is also available in pink if requested, and is just £8.95.

Postage Peeves

Personally, one of my biggest pet peeves is how much it costs to send anything or have it delivered. Postage costs have gone up and up (with few changes to the actual service!) and to be honest if I'm ordering something for George or myself I balk at handing over money that in truth could have bought something else.

I know that even with the postal charges getting higher, it does usually work out cheaper to buy online than drive anywhere to shop and have to pay for parking too.

As a Mum I understand how irritating it is to feel you are paying much more for an item than it's "tag" price. It's because of this that we have held the price of our P&P at just £1.95. Precious Parcels is about special things, beautiful things and fun things. It's not about making a profit on postage charges. Regardless of the size of your order you will only pay £1.95 for standard delivery. Considering the price of delivery, and packaging materials we think that this is a good deal.
We want you to enjoy your purchases, not resent how much you've had to pay for them!

Autumn

Autumn is most definitely here! The flip flops have been put away, sun cream pushed to the back of the cupboard and the search for the gloves and hats that were so carefully put away when spring hit, (but seem to have moved themselves magically) has begun.

I don't know why we are all surprised really, autumn does usually follow summer, but I think that having our summer in April this year has thrown things a bit!

If I had to choose I'd say I was an summer girl while George doesn't care, outside in the sun on the trampoline or rolling in the snow it's all the same to him.

What about you? Are you like me mourning the lost chance of sitting outside, working on the tan and sipping something naughty or are you one who loves Autumn and Winter? (Strange people!).

Really autumn people? You wouldn't prefer to be sat outside in the sun with one of these???

Ok, maybe Autumn isn't my favourite season as it spells the end of hope that summer will arrive but Winter has it's own magic for me, Christmas! (You know that a big kid like me loves all the magic!)

My heart skipped a beat when I saw that this week's theme was Shoes!

Some people say I have a shoe obsession, how silly! I just like shoes, high heeled shoes, flat shoes, pointy shoes, decorated shoes, shiny shoes... oh God and the colours!

I like red shoes, black shoes, I saw a wicked pair of blue ones the other day.

Pah,obsessed? Ridiculous! I just like shoes.

The Tooth Fairy and Santa are pretty much on equal footing in our house. We haven't had any lost teeth as yet as George is too small still but he knows that one day she'll come, take a tooth and leave him pennies! (I must find out at that point what the going rate per tooth is).

Our personalised Tooth Fairy cushions are a brilliant addition to the fantasy and are proving to be very popular, both for presenting lost milk teeth and for keeping as a lovely keepsake!

What is a Precious Parcel?

These are the "face" of Precious Parcels... but what are they? People have been known to shake them to see what's inside or assume they are a gift box of sorts. They are, as one customer said recently, "a lovely and simple way to send a message".

The parcels are just that, an attractively wrapped parcel with a beautiful keepsake poem.

An example of one of the poems is this one, for Dads.

Yes we said it - the C-word!

Here at PP HQ the Christmas orders have already started flooding in! It's made us feel very unprepared for our own Christmas shopping! I mean it's August, we haven't the foggiest what we are buying for who?!
Are we the only ones?

A friends of ours has cards and wrap ready, bought in the January sales and has been buying gifts throughout the year.
Another has been paying into one of those Christmas voucher catalogues and will get a big payout in November and have more than enough to do all of her shopping in one go.
Other people we know haven't actually shopped or saved yet but do have lists of people to buy for with gift ideas and a note of what they bought everyone last year so things don't get confused.

Clearly we need to pull our socks up!!

Gardening Success - woo hoo!

I can do many things.... I can start a business, build a website, give birth, cook a great meal.... but I really struggle with gardening. You could say I'm better at growing weeds than anything else! Luckily, George knows his way around those small fork looking tools better than me!

I am very proud to have grown these fabulous peas,(under George's supervision, and using his new garden kit). George, who lets face it, has had the starring role in the production of these peas, helped me shell them for his Grandad who took them home to make a chicken casserole. Grandad Hickey is still well and has suffered no ill-effects so I think we can call the project a success. Next year we might get adventurous and try carrots!!

Chocolate Cherry Cookies

Master PP loves to bake (and his family are always keen to be supportive of his efforts and test everything!). This was the inspiration behind adding the personalised baking kits to the range!

This recipe, which we got from the Usborne, 30 Yummy Things To Bake (cards), is a firm favourite!

Chocolate Cherry Cookies

(makes 24 cookies)

75g (3oz) butter, softened

75g (3oz) caster sugar

75g (3oz) soft light brown sugar

1 medium egg

1 teaspoon vanilla essence

175g (6oz) plain flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

50g (2oz) dried cherries

100g 94oz) milk or plain chocolate drops

1. Heat the oven to 180 degrees (gas mark 4). Wipe a little oil over two baking trays. Put the butter and both sugars into a large bowl.
2. Stir the butter and sugar with a wooden spoon until the mixture is smoothy & creamy. break the egg into a small bowl.
3. Beat the egg with a fork, then stir in the vanilla essence. Add the eggy mixture to the large bowl, a little at a time
4. Sift the flour and baking powder into the mixture. Stir the mixture until smooth. Cut the cherries & add them.
5. Add 50g (2oz) of the chocolate drops to the mixture and stir them in, put a heaped teaspoon of the mixture onto one tray.
6. use the rest of the mixture to make more cookies. Flatten each one with the back of a fork and sprinkle on more chocolate.
7. Bake the cookies for 10 minutes. Leave them on the trays for a few minutes. Use a spatula to lift them onto a wire tray to cool.

How do you reward children?

What is the "best" way to reward children.

It's a minefield - how do you know which way is the "right" way? We make and send out lots of personalise plaques, particularly for sporting or academic achievements, but how do you reward a child on a daily or weekly basis? There are lots of articles on the net about treats (ie high calorie ones) being linked to childhood obesity, so perhaps regular sweets aren't a grand idea then. Some people give money ie do your chores / collect your stickers and you'll get pocket money at the weekend. Others think verbal praise is more than enough.
There are pros and cons it seems to any kind of reward system, we mustn't let children get to the stage where they expect to get a treat or reward for being good, behaviour should be good regardless. We mustn't give them chocolate or sweets, they'll get fat, we mustn't..... ! Lot's of stuff floating around the internet on forums on how we shouldn't parent our kids (although personally we think it's up to the individual how they choose to raise their kids!) but little practical or helpful advice.

Do you reward your children somehow? If so, how?!

Summer Activities & Fun!

School breaks up this week and although Master PP is still in nursery, we are looking for places to go and things to see when he isn't to make the most of the beautiful summer sun (which WILL be arriving any day now!). Scouring the internet we've found some fantastic ideas and thought we'd share these with you (in the hope that if you have more, you'll do the same lol!). Not a definitive list but some ideas we will definitely be taking advantage of:

The Park,
Forestry Commission (There are forest walks and bike rides all over and the Forestry Commission maintain and map these for us!)
Soft play (for those unavoidable rainy days)
Local museums and attractions (must hit the tourist info site to see what is new locally!)
Bike rides
Lots of garden trampoline time (exercise which is healthy and good for Master PP and more to the point... wears him out!).

Not a huge list to cover the summer but it's a start. What have you got planned this summer and where do you usually look / go for holiday fun inspiration?

Surviving Birthday Parties!

Our last post was about party bags and looking for new and more modern alternatives to the traditional thin plastic bag and toys. Whilst we are on the subject we'd like to pick your brains! We haven't done the "big" birthday party for Master PP yet with all the party food and games and what not, but talking to friends with older children, when Master PP hits school it looks like it's all go on the birthday front. Realising how clueless we are when it comes to what games to play and what food to make prompted this post today.
It's a cry for HELP!
How old was your child before they had their first "proper" party?
What are the best games (read as less likely to cause tears!) to organise?
Are sandwiches and jellies still the order of the day food-wise or have we moved on?

The school holidays have already arrived for some and are just around the corner for others. No more school uniforms to wash, crack of sparrow rising for the school run.... brilliant!
